If you are wanting to stream a quicktime movie, it needs to be put in a special folder on the ustream server.

First you will need to make sure you have an account on the ustream server. If you are not sure if you have an account, or can't remember your password, please contact Neil Torda.

Once you have your account, you can log into the server using FTP.

In your FTP client, connect to ftp://ustream.wcu.edu .

Login in using your account information. You will need to put your hinted movie into the "/Sites/Streaming/" folder inside your home directory.

Once you have your hinted movie in the Streaming folder, you will need to generate a proper link to the file. You can do this using the Embedded Media HTML Generator.

The Quicktime Streaming Server (ustream.wcu.edu) can be used to stream audio and video using Apple's quicktime formats as well as to host flash files.

Any video file you would like to be streamed using quicktime needs to be "hinted." There are a number of ways to generate a hinted file. The easiest way is to use Apple's Quictime Pro software. This software is available in the Faculty Sandbox as well as the following computer labs, FPAC 248, FPAC 256, Killian 268.

1. Open your file in Quicktime Pro and choose Export from the File Menu.

2. In the Export Dialog, choose Movie to Hinted Movie from the Export pop-up Menu, and then click the options button.

3. Make sure the all of the checkboxes are clicked. This will create a hinted movie that is ready to be streamed from the server.

In order to stream media over the internet, you will need to have an account on one of our media servers. WCU has 2 different streaming media servers as well as other options for hosting video file for use in your courses.

Your choices for content delivery:

1. iTunes U
iTunes U is a free, hosted service for colleges and universities that provides easy access to their educational content, including lectures and interviews, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. iTunes U uses the familar iTunes software that most students on campus are familiar with to push new content (audio, video or PDF) automatically to the students computer. Audio and video content are in the proper format to be used on Macintosh and Windows computers as well as iPod digital media players.
If you are interested in having your class added to iTunes U, please fill out the Account Request Form and choose iTunes U Account from the category menu.
